Vice President JD Vance is expected to visit the Charlotte area this week with the city at the center of a renewed debate about public safety.

Vance is planning to speak in Concord on Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the matter. The vice president is expected to center his talk on public safety and provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill, a wide-ranging Republican-backed law passed by Congress this year.

Vance and President Donald Trump were frequent visitors to North Carolina in 2024 before they were elected, including to the Triangle. Trump visited western North Carolina in January to meet with those still hurting from Hurricane Helene.

The announcement comes as North Carolina legislators are pushing forward with a variety of proposals on criminal law, including an effort to make
it harder for people with histories of criminal behavior and mental
illness to go back onto the street after being arrested.

Charlotte is where 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed on a commuter train in August. Footage from the incident drew national attention and ignited a conversation about public safety and sentencing policies for repeat offenders.

Zarutska fled to the U.S. from Ukraine. Decarlos Brown was charged with her death and faces federal and state murder charges.

Vance and Trump spoke at a memorial service for slain political commentator Charlie Kirk in Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday.
