(TNND) — A candlelight vigil on Monday night reflected on the thirty-day anniversary of the stabbing of Ukrainian refugee, Iryna Zarutska.
The vigil was held at a Rail Station in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she was killed.
Throughout the vigil, attendees chanted, clapped, prayed, and held moments of silence for Zarutska, making sure she would be remembered. One speaker, Kyle Kirby, said he is asking the Charlotte City Council and the Charlotte Authority Transit to rename the station the “Iryna Zarutska station” in her honor.
Another vigil will also be held on the 60-day anniversary of her death.
What happened to Zarutska?
A video dated from one month ago, released by the Charlotte Area Transit System, appears to show the moments Zarutska boarded the train at the station where the vigil was held, only a month later.
On Aug. 22, Zarutska sat in front of the suspect, Decarlos Brown, Jr.
Brown, a repeat offender, was identified as the suspect by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Iryna Zarutska’s death. A judge issued a “no bond” order.
In the video, Brown pulls out what appears to be a pocket knife and begins to stab Zarutska multiple times.
Shortly before 10 p.m. on the night of the attack, police said they found Zarutska suffering from multiple knife wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
