Áras watch: ‘Malicious smears’ targeting Jim Gavin appear to be first signs of outside far-right interference in an Irish election

  1. Plenty of dodgy looking Twitter accounts saying that the reason the ‘big reveal’ in this scandal is being delayed until the 23rd of October is to prevent Fianna Fáil from parachuting in a replacement candidate. Even though nominations for the presidency close this Wednesday.

Strong whiff of bullshit about it all, tbh.

  2. I totally get that the story is almost certainly some looney spreading BS but I don’t get what they want social media companies to do. If they take it all down and it then turns out to be true, what then?

  3. It’s weird we didn’t see more outside interference in the election last year, but I guess it goes to show how little outside actors truly now about Ireland. If they really wanted a meaningful far right victory, they would have tried to interfere more in the general election. The position of President is symbolically important but in terms of actual power, does not have the pull that many who weren’t Irish would expect it to have.

  4. I haven’t seen the rumours as I dont spend much time on Facebook or Twitter or TikTok. But whatever they are they seem to at least be giving Gavin a much needed personality. Up to now he has been like a robot to me.

  5. I hate the far right, hate the right . Love what Jim Gavin helped our county achieve. But these rumours aren’t new . They re old and stubborn

  6. Not sure what he expects the social media companies to do .
    They ban john123 today
john124 says the same shite tomorrow

  7. How is it outside interference if the person doing it is a naturalised Irish citizen?

  8. I personally would like him to clarify which rumors are false. I would also like his opinion on the article the ditch posted today regarding the DAA.

  9. I get constant videos on my feed on tiktok from a yank wannabe Irish. “Captain” Kieran Kelly, reckons he has proof of affairs etc. I’ll post them tommorow, stay tuned his campaign will be over. Then nothing 🤣

Absolute looneys, sad part is we have enough dopes in the country that believe the shite that is spread.

  10. I think Conor McGregor was actually the first sign of outside far-right interference.

  11. Translation of the headline:

    “Outside” = not rte
“Far right” = I don’t like what was said
“Interference” = I don’t like the person who said it

Spreading bullshit about someone, true or not, is politics 101. I don’t condone it but the Helen Lovejoy level of reactions are laughable.

Gavin is a political newbie. He’s literally trading on his reputation as a “celebrity” candidate. To think someone wouldn’t attack his reputation, even with lies, is naive.

As I said I don’t condone it. His family have been dragged in which isn’t right. But not everyone plays fair in politics. All the candidates are getting some sort of reputational attack.

  12. Not the English, Americans, Elon musk etc…. it must be the RUSSIANS because why?

  13. Really hope that if it is malicious misinformation – that they’re able to identify the sources and sue them into the ground. Only way that we prevent ourselves from becoming like the US is if we make sure people who behave like this face consequences.
