Scottish alcohol deaths at lowest rate for five years

  1. It’s all the Scottish governments fault. Blame them for the drop. And who is going to resign.

  2. Have you seen the price of a pint? I’m not surprised!

  3. I have adult kids in their early twenties and they hardly ever drink and neither do any of their friends. The pandemic made them and their friends all socialise differently and that followed by rapid inflation has just turned going out and consuming alcohol into an occasional thing instead of something that is done regularly with your mates.

  4. I’m glad to see alcohol start to decline, it’s a shitty drug, one of the worst in terms of making people behave poorly and aggressively and become dependent on it. It’s corrupt alcohol is legal and recreational cannabis isn’t.

Booze culture is becoming less and less popular as the costs grow and the younger generations continue to be put off by it, bolstered by the continued poor behaviours of generations before them who still rely on it. Many have seen their “boomer mad” parents drink themselves half to death or at least being somewhat alcohol dependent.

Honestly, good. Cannabis culture is sitting right there ready to take it’s place and fill the void. We’re already the worlds biggest supplier of medical cannabis, so lets just stop the charade and legalise recreational so it can become a thriving sector, and cafe’s can replace lots of the failing pubs and allow the tax gains to bolster the NHS. The numbers are only going to grow in the positive as this is the case with every single country and city that has implemented recreational. Every one of them has seen positive growth and tax income and are beginning to thrive again in ways they hadn’t been able to do without it.

Booze culture is one of the worst things about UK culture and continually leads to terrible behaviour and dependence in a way cannabis never has or will. Pubs will never truly die out and good to that aswell as they have their place, however their place of being every 5 feet in every city in the UK has long since been overdue to decline and we are starting to see that more and more.

It’s time for the UK to evolve in many ways as we continue to enter into this new digital age of technology and ideals. Right now we are falling behind in many ways and this is one of the ways we can help get out of this era of stagnation.

tldr; Recreational cannabis needs to become legal so cafe’s can replace the dying pubs and our economy and NHS can be bolstered with the tax gains, it’s hypocritical for us to be the world’s biggest exporter of medical cannabis while having recreational remain illegal.

  5. Only in Scotland could this somehow be treated as a negative.

“Ohh it’s cause booze is so unaffordable now!”

“It’s cause of the authoritarian SNP and their bull shit drinking laws!”

How about praising younger people for being much more health aware or learning from the mistakes of abusing alcohol like the previous generations didn’t? How about being grateful that should help finally provide some ease in seeing a GP and relieve the pressure on hospital wards?

But naw, this is Scotland, being an unhealthy shower of pissheads is what we’re supposed to be 😫

  6. They’re all just doing drugs and vapes now instead. That’s a problem that’ll take a few more years to have it’s full impact.

  7. It’s a welcome change that seems to be driven by both a cultural shift among younger people and the simple reality of the cost of living.

  8. Coke, Ket and mandy has replaced alcohol for a lot of people. We might be jumping out the pan into the fire. I really hope I’m wrong, though, and we dont see drug addiction rising even more. Almost everyone I know, and I mean all ages from young adults onwards ( I know of an individual in their late 60s that enjoys a line at the weekend – retired teacher as well ) does some form of recreational drug and doesn’t drink anymore.

  9. Cocaine related health issue rates gone up I’d bet

  10. Seems progress being made on both drugs and alcohol deaths. Fingers crossed it continues.

  11. > alcohol consumption being reduced

    Yes. Looks positive.

However, a huge caveat. If drug use is increasing, and if alcohol consumption is reduced because the cost of living is too expensive and/or people don’t go out and socialise – well, we have a totally different problem.

Young people don’t drink as much, but they’re also terrified of phones and social situations.

  12. The curfew is ridiculous though, I was in England not long ago and being able to buy drink at 3am just felt normal, and then the 10pm curfew upon returning to Scotland felt like we were school children. Midnight should be the cutoff in my opinion, it just makes more sense. I get the rates of alcohol related deaths are higher up here but, aye.
