  1. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirms that Russian military planes have violated Norwegian airspace on three occasions this year.

Norway joins NATO’s condemnation of Russian airspace violations against allied countries. At the same time, the Norwegian government reveals that it has experienced three incidents this year. Russia has violated Norwegian airspace on three occasions in the spring and summer, Støre states in a press release from the government. Two of the incidents occurred over sea areas northeast of Vardø, while the third took place over an uninhabited area along the land border in East Finnmark. The violations lasted between one and four minutes.

These are incidents that we view very seriously, says Støre. The first incident occurred on April 25, when a Russian SU-24 fighter jet flew through Norwegian airspace for four minutes. On July 24, a Russian L410 Turbolet aircraft flew through Norwegian airspace for three minutes. The most recent incident was on August 18, when a Russian SU-33 fighter jet violated Norwegian airspace for one minute. – We cannot quickly decide whether this was done deliberately or whether it was due to navigation errors, says the Prime Minister. The three incidents come after more than ten years without such incidents in Norwegian airspace.

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide says Norwegian authorities have handled the cases directly with Russian authorities and requested an explanation for the violations. On Tuesday, NATO condemned Russia’s violation of Estonian airspace on September 19, as well as similar incidents in Poland and Romania.

The Conservative Party also joins NATO’s condemnation of Russian violations of allied airspace. – The Storting’s extended Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee has been briefed on the three violations of Norwegian airspace. Although it cannot be determined with certainty whether the violations of Norwegian airspace were deliberate or due to navigation errors, Norway must be clear to the Russian authorities that it does not accept this, says Ine Marie Eriksen (H), chair of the Storting’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, in a statement. She believes Russian violations of Norwegian, Polish, Estonian and Romanian airspace are an unacceptable and serious development that fits into a clear pattern. Eriksen points out that Norway’s security is inextricably linked to the European security situation. – The situation is deteriorating rapidly, and Russia is using various means, both military and civilian, to provoke, create uncertainty and unrest and test defense capabilities and unity.
