France keeps December 12 date for New Caledonia’s independence referendum

    what, France is holding referendums every 2 ywars till independence wins? is there going to be a referendum as well in 2024? Till, if it ever happens, independence wins, they will keep asking people about it?

  2. From what I understand, this is going to be the last referendum that the Noumea Accords of 1998 allowed, with a restricted franchise that gives an edge to the pro-independence Kanaks.

    So, someone who knows more than me, what’s going to happen now? With this, the anti-independence side will win the referendum, but the pro-independence side won’t accept it. Will there be another referendum in the future? Perhaps with an extended franchise? Will the matter be put to bed for good? I’d be interested to hear.

  3. Lets hope theyll just push it back to next year.

    I mean, COVID should be a good reason, especially as New Caledonia was only really hit directly starting this summer
