Limerick court told ‘idle hands’ led to cultivation of cannabis plants

  1. It’s insane the waste inherent in these prosecutions for simple cultivation, where there isn’t even an allegation that it was for sale or supply.

Waste of time from the Gardaí in looking for a warrant, executing the warrant, getting themselves to court (at least the last of those means overtime). Waste of time for the court in hearing the case, which is particularly egregious given how blocked up the courts are. Finally a waste of time for either the probation service or the prison service depending on what the judge decides.

  2. _’Judge Patricia Harney said: “Something led gardai to his door.”‘_

An ass-backwards drug policy and an uncontrollable urge to flush taxpayer funds down the toilet?

  3. I mean, the gardai and the courts *could* be focusing on teens that douse people in petrol and set them alight.

Or they could spend all their efforts on some lad growing a plant.

  4. > They found a quantity of cannabis plants with a potential value of €800 and cannabis herb valued at €20,” said Insp Heelan, who added that Mr Ryan has five previous convictions including one for possession of drugs.

This €800 figure keeps coming up. There is no indication of the maturity of the plant which leads me to believe that the Gardai are simply arbitrarily applying a value of €800 to *any* cannabis plant, regardless of maturity.

An immature cannabis plant is as useless as hops on their own in terms of brewing. The flowers are the substance that contains THC which gets people high and these do not appear until the plant matures.

If the Gardai are valuing any plant, regardless of maturity, at an arbitrary figure this presents a problem. The reality is that an immature cannabis plant has zero sale value – it is as useless as any random houseplant.

The Gardai should be focused on solving violent crimes rather than wasting time and resources targeting people growing cannabis for their own use and then inflating the value to make to seem less of a waste of time, energy and resources.

Just legislate, for heaven’s sake, and move into the 21st century.

  5. >Kevin Power, solicitor for Mr Ryan, said his client had lost his job in Shannon Airport.
“He had a good job there. Essentially it was idle hands. He is back working now,” said Mr Power.

Solicitors will say anything to get their clients off, even the most stupid shit that comes into their head. But the good ones look at the judge they have to play ball with , like horses they have form, sometimes saying he’s growing weed to save money works but largely ya gotta play … *shur he’s a unemployed waster who went to drugs because a glorious job wasn’t there to save his soul* – like here in this case. What a stupid criminal system.

  6. There’s a guy in another post complaining his estate is riddled with scum causing troubles guards won’t do shit and people saying just move, this fckn gem will be prob in newspapers with a guy named second Pablo Escobar growing billion worth drug industry in his room, to smoke in fckn peace, what a kip of a country, not only fact useless cunts spend hundreds hours and thousands to carry these petty operations on someone minding his own fckn business, while actual social crime issues go oh well it’s only kids damaging cars or jumping people.

    Pathetic country
