UN Security Council votes to reimpose Iran nuclear sanctions, Tehran blasts ‘illegal’ move

It was the expected outcome, but still a huge blow to Thran. On Friday, the UN Security Council moved to reimpose crippling sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. This after Britain, France, and Germany accused the country of failing to uphold commitments made under a 2015 deal. Officials however still have 8 days to try to suspend the penalties that European powers want Iran to meet certain conditions like allowing access for UN nuclear inspectors. We regret that Iran has so far failed to take these steps. The United Kingdom remains committed to a diplomatic solution. We are ready for further engagements diplomatically in the next week and beyond to seek to resolve differences. The E3 say Thran is building up enriched uranium stock to more than 40 times the permitted level and has rolled back monitoring measures by the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency. Tensions have been particularly high since the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June, which saw Israel and the US bomb Iranian nuclear installations. This derailed Thran’s nuclear negotiations with Washington and prompted Iran to suspend cooperation with the IAEA. Last week, though, Iran agreed on a new framework for working with the watchdog. And on Friday, Iran’s foreign minister said he put forward a fair proposal to prevent the return of UN sanctions. I presented a reasonable and actionable plan to E3 EU counterparts to avert an unnecessary and avoidable crisis in the coming days. Instead of being met with engagement on the substance of this plan, Iran is now faced with a litany of excuses and outright deflection. The so-called snapback reimposes the harsh penalties that were in place before the 2015 deal. They include visa bans, asset freezes, an embargo on sales of conventional arms, and restrictions on ballistic missile production.

A UN Security Council resolution aimed at halting the reimposition of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme failed Friday after weeks of last-ditch diplomatic talks appeared to break down. France, Germany and Britain have moved to trigger the “snapback mechanism” of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal which reimposes sanctions that were in effect before the deal. Carys Garland explains.
