>Jimmy Kimmel never thought he’d be here. But Kimmel has the skill to rise to this moment, at a jarring time in this country’s history as freedoms are under attack and democracy hangs on just by a thread.
>On Tuesday’s return of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” we were reminded of that. Kimmel struck the perfect tone, acknowledging the gravity of what had just happened, reminding his audience that both sides of the aisle should cherish and celebrate free speech — and then not pulling any punches in joking about what Donald Trump has been up to over the last few days. Political satire has been a late night staple since the dawn of the entire genre, and Kimmel was going to make sure it isn’t going anywhere.
He did great. He showed vulnerability and met the energy of the moment.
I saw a criticism that he should have doubled down, but he showed he was a nice guy who cares about his employees, his country, and our first amendment right. He had plenty of very funny Trump jokes. The clips he showed spoke for themselves.
Donald Trump in trying to silence Jimmy invited a lot of curious Americans to watch the monologue. What they saw was a sincere guy who just made common sense against a reckless administration who wants Americans to fight each other.
This is because of our boycott!!! The headlines aren’t going to tell people this though. But it’s the reason why he’s back on at all.
Canceling those subscriptions really hurt our oppressors and made them take notice. Now we know how to hit’em. Honestly, I’m more proud of my fellow citizens than I have been in a long time.
F#CK Nexstar and WKRN Nashville. I watched Kimmel an hour later on youtube https://youtu.be/c1tjh_ZO_tY?si=VpRUT7O9FiWFE4Zj and am watching it again now. Jimmy is a class act and a warrior for the 1st Amendment. I have blocked WKRN on my TV for choosing to be an un-American, anti-free speech channel and will be contacting their sponsors tomorrow to voice my disgust
I haven’t watched him in 9 years since he stopped doing comedy. I wish his show the worst
Kimmel hit it out of the park, check it out if you can. Available on YouTube.
Several times he was truly almost in tears and unable to speak. It was the rawest ten minutes I’ve ever seen on any late-night monologue, and he strained to be a uniter, not a divider. Besides Ted Cruz he mentioned messages of support from Republican stalwarts such as Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, and unreservedly offered his sympathy and compassion to Charlie Kirk’s combative widow. It was extraordinary how generous and peace-offering he was; and his defense of the First Amendment and our right to laugh at our leaders was a marvel.
He observed that he’d received sympathetic and encouraging messages from maybe everybody he’d ever known — including the man *”who fired me from my first radio job”* in Seattle when he was so young that he moved back in with his parents. (The cause was his refusal to give away donuts to listeners who called in with a joke, a so-called “Jokes for Donuts” feature; he had his standards!)
We’ll see , He’ll need to have a strong spine if he’s going up against MAGA. They smell weakness and like any bully that’s where they go.
Here’s the opening monologue on YouTube. It’s worth watching especially to the end.
