ROME, Sept 23 (Reuters) – Italy will recognise a Palestinian state only if all Israeli hostages are released and the Hamas militant group is excluded from any government role, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday.”I am not against the recognition of Palestine, but we should set ourselves the right priorities,” Meloni told reporters, announcing her government would present a motion to parliament on the issue.
>Speaking from New York where she is attending the United Nations General Assembly, Meloni also said international pressure should be placed on Hamas rather than Israel, blaming the group for[starting the war](https://www.reuters.com/world/israel-hamas/)Â and blocking its end by refusing to hand over hostages.
Personal take: Shes 100% correct. There is almost 0 international pressure on Hamas to end the war, a war started by their actions, only demanding Israel to stop.
It is a very good step to want a Palestinian state, which will help israeli security, by demanding the extremists have no part.
Either it’s a terrorist group or it’s a state. Can’t be both. Clever solution.
If the world was as smart as this Hamas would agree to terms ending the war a year ago. Instead most nations chose to practically side with Hamas and only pressure the victim which had war declared on it in the most brutal way possible, Israel.
Good take, Palestine doesn’t have the required criteria for being a state like indipendence and sovereignty but in this way pression is on both sides and it’s way better than a general “recognize palestine” which would only prompt hamas
This seems like the better way to do it. Don’t reward terrorism and hostage-taking, reward releasing the hostages and disarming the terrorists.
I’ve always found it very odd that the recognition of a nation of people can be contingent on some very specific conditions. Either you recognize and support a people’s right to self-determination, or you don’t. Why would Hamas be the deciding factor in this? In fact, the PLO (which is internationally recognized as the representatives of the Palestinians) don’t even see eye to eye with Hamas and aren’t friendly towards each other to say the least. So why is Hamas even in the equation of a recognition of Palestinian statehood?
I can see the headlines already.
>Hamas disbands. Hamas-with-a-moustache elected in landslide victory. Questions linger over Qatari money links.
This is so naive. The middle of a war isn’t the time for old colonial powers to revert to type and start redrawing the lines on the maps and entangling themselves in future conflicts. What will they do when NuHamas does an October 7 again and they all have to vote on a UN Resolution about deploying their own peacekeeping forces into Palestine or Israel or both? This is a sectarian dispute based on Isaac vs Ishmael and antisemites in heat are going to kickstart a chain of events which might actually get their kids killed in the actual valley of Megiddo.
Respectable forward-looking optimism
Demonic freaks
So same route as Belgium, good
This sounds like a roundabout way to be neutral. We all know we can denounce Hamas while also validating Palestinian authority. Make a decision, make a stand
Too logical, what does Hamas get out of this?
How come Italy’s suggestion, which makes the most sense, isn’t the one the other countries went with?
Asking Hamas to release hostages as the first basic condition before even considering anything sounds about as legit as it gets, yet the vast majority of countries never did that
The Palestinians have a right to self defence from an occupying force. If izrael eff off, there’ll be no need for Hamas.
Meloni is a lot smarter than people realize
