German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil warned against underestimating Putin’s intentions, suggesting he may attack NATO by 2029. He emphasized the importance of continuing military assistance to Ukraine and enhancing Germany’s defense capabilities.

Klingbeil, during a session of the Bundestag, presented the draft federal budget for 2026 and the financial plan for 2025-2029, stating: “We are obliged to strengthen our deterrence and defense capabilities. We are doing the right thing by standing with Ukraine, and today Germany is one of the largest donors helping Ukraine defend itself from this brutal war. We ensure this support continues: the 2026 budget commits to it. A clear promise to Ukraine is more military and financial aid”.

Klingbeil highlighted that the 2025 and 2026 budgets focus on substantial investment in defense. The proposed German budget totals €520.5B, with the Defense Ministry’s allocation rising by €20.3B to €82.7B, including €38.5B for military procurement. Additionally, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stressed that Europe must “grow up” and bolster its support for Ukraine.
