BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA CO. (WOLF) — An exhibit at the Barton House during the Bloomsburg Fair showcased the significant contributions of women during the Civil War. The display featured replicas and portraits, detailing the various roles women played on both sides of the conflict, including fundraising, espionage, and even disguising themselves as men to fight.
Rebecca Ermisch, a museum historian who was present at the exhibit wearing period-appropriate clothing, noted the inspiration women drew from figures like Florence Nightingale, saying, “When the war happened, ladies wanted to help out. Some ladies had read the book that was put out about Florence Nightingale, and they were inspired and they thought, wouldn’t it be great to be, you know, to help out this way?”
The Barton House, known for its portrayal of 18th-century life, hosts various events throughout the fair.
