Typhoon Ragasa causes deaths and widespread damage across East Asia • FRANCE 24 English

Typhoon Ragasa continued on its westward course on Wednesday, leaving its heaviest mark on Taiwan. On the east coast of the island, a number of people were killed when a barrier lake overflowed early on Tuesday morning, flooding the mountain township of Guang Fu with about 60 million tons of water. More than 120 people are reported missing. The barrier lake was formed several decades ago by a landslide which damned a river in the region. Residents who had not already evacuated the area were forced to take refuge on the upper floors of buildings. Ragasa then passed around 100 kilometers south of Hong Kong, which issued its highest typhoon signal number 10 early on Wednesday morning as residents hunkered down at home with wind and rain lashing the largely empty streets. Waves as high as 5 m beat down on the coast of the financial hub, causing widespread flooding along the south of the city. Dozens were reported injured, including a woman and her 5-year-old son, who were swept into the sea by swells while watching waves on Tuesday afternoon. Both were rescued and hospitalized. Hong Kong’s meteorological observatory lowered the storm signal on Wednesday afternoon, but the city’s airport remained closed, having suspended operations for 36 hours the previous evening. The storm then moved onto China’s southwestern coast, where high waves battered the casino hub of Macau, while authorities in Guang Dong and Guangshi provinces mobilized to protect the region’s nuclear power stations. Though Ragasa is of a greater intensity than 2018’s Typhoon Mangut, the last comparable storm to affect the region, its impact in most places is less due to its center being further offshore.

Super Typhoon Ragasa caused severe flooding and casualties in eastern Taiwan after a barrier lake overflowed, killing several people and leaving over 120 missing. The storm also battered Hong Kong and southwestern China, prompting the highest typhoon warnings, widespread flooding, injuries, and airport closures, though its overall impact was less severe than Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018 due to its offshore path. Authorities in affected regions have mobilized to protect critical infrastructure as the storm moves westward.
