More than 1,130 drivers were caught speeding in and around elementary schools in the capital area during police speed checks in May and September, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.
In total, 1,137 drivers were fined for speeding, with the highest recorded speed being 70 km/h in a 30 km/h zone.
Speed checks near children’s crossing routes
Police conducted 38 speed checks in connection with the end of the school year in May and the return of students in September.
A special police speed camera vehicle was stationed near numerous schools and pedestrian crossings used by children.
The monitoring covered 5,048 vehicles. On average, just over 20% of drivers were found to be speeding, though the rate varied depending on location.
Of those fined, 984 drivers were caught in 30 km/h zones, where their average speed was 43.5 km/h.
Another 153 drivers were caught in 40 km/h zones, where their average speed was 52.5 km/h.
The police once again reminded motorists to drive carefully, especially near schools, where many young and inexperienced pedestrians are present at the start of the school year.
