  1. The first one is like an intro, pause for a second but don’t expect people to say anything, although imagine there are lots of other people who also haven’t been to mass in ages. Only pause for reaction on the last one.

  2. Yeah, the congregation will reply with “Lord graciously hear us” so you pause for that.

But bring the paper to it’s you, absolutely nothing wrong with reading it.

  3. “… which only he can give.”

    [Quick pause]

While looking up: “Lord hear us”

    [longer pause for response]

    [Breathe]

    “May the god…”

  4. Yes pause at the at each “Lord hear us”, the congregation will have to give the response to the call. It needs to be a fairly sizeable gap as well, the congregation is meant to be able to reflect on and comprehend the prayer as they make the response

Don’t learn it off, have a general knowledge of what’s on the paper and practice it but no one does them without the paper on the alter. The importance of maintaining the exact and correct wording of the prayer is extremely important in Catholicism because a lot of work is meant to be put into designing the prayers and reading it reduces the risk of something being misremembered or misspoken. From a theological point of view there’s no benefit to the reader learning off the piece, the important part is the correct prayer and the reflection from the congregation.

Here you go. Don’t say the crossed out red line bits.Pause where it says pause, the congregation will say “Lord graciously hear us”.You DON’T have to memorise it. I’ve NEVER in my life seen anyone memorise this stuff. You can chose to to keep your aunties happy, but bring the paper just incase the nerves get to you.

Both times you forgot a “He”. “Which only He can give.”

    Good luck.

  6. Is that not the same paragraph twice? I’ve never heard of the same prayer of the faithful being repeated, I’d have thought you’d read the first paragraph, everyone says “Lord hear us”, and then the next person does the next prayer.

  7. I’ve read prayers if the faithful at so many funerals I lost count and I’ve always read it from the paper. Some even given to me that morning

  8. Don’t worry. Even the people who know this stuff word perfect usually have a page as a prop, for comfort or for something to look at instead of looking unfocused.

  9. The first time I went to read one of these, everyone just expected me to know what to do. I wasn’t raised with any sort of religion, so it was mildly petrifying trying to figure it out as the people before me went up.

  10. It’s the “lord hear us” at the end of the paragraph, you pause for the crowd to respond, you can also read it from the sheet so I wouldn’t be too worried about learning it off.

  11. I always heard the priest speaking this bit and we’d do the reply but I never thought to actually listen to the words. First time I’ve found out what it says. So TIL
