He was beaten in the second round in Budapest at the weekend by Luke Littler, but not before an extraordinary game against Lukas Wenig.
The Wyke native took on the Tour Card qualifier in round one and got off to a flying to start, breaking to take a 3-1 advantage.
Cullen soon moved 4-2 up and was in the box seat when he led 5-4, but Wenig forced a decider.
And the German looked all set to claim a 6-5 victory when he left himself with 81 to close out victory with his Bradford opponent not even on a finish.
But Wenig collapsed with the finishing line in sight, missing three match darts over his next two visits, including two at D12.
By now, Cullen had caught up, and he gleefully took out 36 to claim a 6-5 victory.
Sadly, the Wyke ace was well below his best against Littler, averaging just 83.60, which made victory near-impossible against the teenage sensation.
Littler quickly broke twice to romp into a 4-0 lead, before Cullen finally held throw to get on the board.
That was all he got though, the 18-year-old quickly wrapping up a 6-1 victory with a 94.50 average and up at 75 per cent on the doubles.
Littler made it to the semis, where he lost to Danny Noppert, but the Dutchman came up short in the final, beaten by surprise winner Niko Springer, the German only being a Tour Card qualifier for the tournament.
As for Cullen, he is not competing at the Swiss Darts Trophy European Tour event in Basel this weekend.
Instead, his focus will be on the Players Championship triple-header in Leicester next week.
He won the last Players’ tournament earlier this month, beating Gerwyn Price 8-7 in the final out in Germany.
