Secretary of State Marco Rubio jumped on the defense after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan threw shade at President Donald Trump.
During a sit-down interview with Fox News, Erdoğan was asked by host Bret Baier about how the war in Gaza, which has stretched for just under two years, could ultimately come to an end.
“I could only say this — Mr. Trump, you might remember, he used a term, when he said I will finish the Russia-Ukraine war. Did it end? It still goes on. Similarly, he said I will finish the war in Gaza. Did it end? No,” Erdoğan said on “Special Report” on Monday.
“That means, once we start analyzing the issue, there are prices to pay, and when we look at the hostage exchange, that was done. It goes on,” he added.
In April, Trump told Time magazine that he was joking when he pledged to end the Russia-Ukraine war in the first 24 hours of his second term. He also vowed to quickly find lasting peace between Israel and Hamas.
“I said that figuratively, and I said that as an exaggeration, because to make a point, and you know, it gets, of course, by the fake news… Obviously, people know that when I said that, it was said in jest, but it was also said that it will be ended,” Trump said when asked about the war in Ukraine by Time, calling it “Biden’s war.”
In the same interview, Trump also said that “Oct. 6 would have never happened. Oct. 7 would have never happened. Would have never happened.”
Rubio was confronted with the comments made by the NATO ally on “Fox & Friends” early Tuesday.
“Look, I didn’t hear the entirety of the interview. I could only tell you that on both of those issues, on the case of Russia-Ukraine, the only leader in the world that has any chance of bringing it to an end is President Trump, which is why he has put more time and energy into it than anybody else,” Rubio said.
“All these other countries, including Türkiye by the way, are begging us to be involved. They want us to be involved. Look, these people go out and say what they want to say, but at the end of the day, when they want something done, they want to come to the White House,” he continued.
Erdoğan’s comments come as he is slated to visit the White House on Thursday to discuss trade and military agreements.
“We are working on many Trade and Military Deals with the President, including the large scale purchase of Boeing aircraft, a major F-16 Deal, and a continuation of the F-35 talks, which we expect to conclude positively,” Trump previously wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Trump is also set to address the U.N. General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, with Erdoğan also expected to speak. The U.S. Secret Service said earlier that it “dismantled a network of electronic devices located throughout the New York tristate area that were used to conduct multiple telecommunications-related threats directed towards senior U.S. government officials.”
