Is this common in Switzerland?

  1. Common is the wrong word.

There’s country music fans that somehow came to identify the confederate flag with country music.

You’ll see it on cars, on the roadside, especially also on commercial trucks and at the country music festivals.

From what I can tell people don’t identify with the states rights meaning of the flag or even the more racist implications, but I wouldn’t vouch for anyone flying that flag.

  2. Not common but doesn’t have the meaning you might think. Some rural people associate the confederate flag with country music, old American cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles. They watched a lot of Dukes of Hazard and other shows uncritically.

You will see this flag occasionally on old muscle cars or motorcycles and in bars decorated retro America style.

  3. So see all the stuff that kinda glorified cowboys, the South and everything ? Well it works.

Duke of Hazzards with the [General Lee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Lee_(car)#/media/File:Nationale_oldtimerdag_Zandvoort_2010,_1969_DODGE_CHARGER,_AM-20-10.JPG) was a really succesful TV show in the 70’s. More people will associate it to that.

And as it happens in the US, the Confederacy has also been romantized. So there’s definitely some people seeing it as a symbol of resistance.

    Basically there’s idiots everywhere.

  4. It is probably viewed differently as in the US.
Often linked to the american farmer / larger farmer states dream. Something we don’t have – lots if restrictions, little place etc.

I guess it is less associated to the history of what the flag meant. I am not trying to protect anyone, but thats how most would interpret that flag. Maybe you can call it ignorance or stupidity. Exists both.

  5. I saw one on the bumper of a pickup truck of a small business some time ago. they took it off 1-2 years ago.

  6. There is a big misconception about this flag, but that’s mainly due to U.S fault to begin with. The US just kinda recently “found out” again that this flag is actually quite racist.

Look at the general lee car: an Icon car and it has the flag on it. I know it’s accurate because of generale lee or whatever, but it was pushed a lot in american pop culture so you would find it around europe randomly

  7. from the European but not swiss standpoint, i think only the most internation folks here recognize the meaning of that flag in a “american context”. I, too, remember seeing it on toy soldiers, flags, motorbikes, basically everything hard rock, country, biker culture and whatnot until maybe a couple of years ago. I’ve friends that absolutely would not see themselves in the current “values” associated with it, but as they don’t speak english, they think it’s a cool “rebel” flag.

  8. Some people are uninformed, some people are dumb and some people are racist rednecks. We’ve got all of them.

  9. why is it that this sub has turned into karens posting pictures and ramt about everything they find annoying, just like the fireworks story a few days ago, holy shit go find some hobbies

  10. Not common, but you also shouldn’t be easily fooled by people who play dumb when confronted about their display of it. By now, they certainly know what that flag represents

  11. Most swiss understand that we don’t need to adapt the dumb american meaning for this flag and can just use it as “rebel flag” as no one gets offended here that easily

  12. Never saw it except in Ticinese fans in sport, representing “we are the south of Switzerland”. But I’m not sure if i saw it in these last years.

  13. I live in Emmental and I’ve seen quite a few confederate flags. There are two houses in Burgdorf with such flags on them, one in Hindelbank and I’ve seen a couple of confederate flag stickers on trucks driving around my area too.

  14. I just saw one of those (plus a Trump and anti-biden flag) on a balcony in the middle of Zurich) recently. Don‘t think it‘s common, but idiots are everywhere.

  15. Not common but those who use these confederate flags in Europe are mostly country music or Harley Davidson fans.

  16. There are some people in Switzerland who like that flag. They refuse to accept that this is a racist symbol. So in my opinion it’s a way some swiss people involuntarily acknowledge their stupidity.
