Why Are So Many Republicans Too Stubborn or Too Uninformed to Acknowledge Climate Change?

  1. Because it costs money to change the energy supply and the oil execs may not remain in charge. They’re afraid this change may be hard.

  2. It destroys their false belief that the free market solves all problems. The solution requires international cooperation and if international cooperation on that scale is possible then not only are they wrong about market failures, they’re also wrong about evil foreigners and inferior races.

  3. Because propaganda and corporate sponsored misinformation is a helluva drug

  4. “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

  5. Because they’re bought and paid for by the fossil fuel industry

  6. American religion has long had a stubborn anti science streak. The idea of dangerous heat trapping gases is abstract and not mentioned on the Bible so whatever.

  7. Cause they care more about their stock trades than they do about their grandchildren

  8. They’re not too stubborn or misinformed. Their religious beliefs (Christian, often evangelical) tell them that this is all part of His plan. Pollution and climate change are just proof to them that the End is near.

I’m not religious but I’m surrounded by them. Trust me on this. Most of them don’t gaf about the climate and never will.

  9. Incumbents with high rents being able to buy politicians, think tanks and airwaves.

  10. You can’t tell MAGA the truth. You have to tell them things like, ‘No, climate change is a hoax, even though Shell did a huge confidential report back in 1988 on how the greenhouse effect is real and will cause irreparable damage to the planet in the near future’. Now, **THAT**, they’ll believe!

  11. Does anyone besides me find it alarming the way it is acceptable to label people as either a Republican or Democrat and ascribe characteristics to them? For example, how many “Republicans” does the poster actually know who do not accept climate change? Or is the poster relying on main stream media to have this viewpoint?

  12. Because rolling coal in their giant pickup makes them feel like a man, and they can’t live without that gender affirming care

  13. As soon as they start acknowledging science and reality, their entire political platform falls apart.

  14. Donors. You can’t go against party and donors talking points

  15. Because they are putting near term profit before everything else and they either think technology will fix climate change at some future point or that they won’t be alive when the worst circumstances are here.

  16. There are some who acknowledge that the climate is changing, but they absolutely will not accept that humans have anything to do with it. “Yes, it’s changing, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”

  17. Truthfully, they’re baby boomers. Uneducated. Most don’t even have high school education, let alone complex issues like climate science or technology. No wonder they’re infatuated with religion – they’ve never had a history lesson. Sad.

  18. The cliff notes version is oligarchs have paid a lot of money to brainwash folks into believing it’s a hoax.

Now that that’s out of the way, it never ceases to amaze me that people believe there is some massive “green conspiracy” that virtually all scientists are in on for this so called scam. Scientists, btw, most of whom will never be rich and have dedicated their life to the pursuit of knowledge. Versus, you know, a handful of oil barons who have an interest in keeping us on fossil fuels.

It’s like people have no concept or understanding of Occam’s Razor.

  19. They are a very sensitive group of people who get their feelings hurt and become upset when faced with facts about their own consumer activities. They prefer the freedom that ignorance affords them.

  20. Because proponents of climate change keep lying. Not that their wrong about climate change in general, they just can’t get their ducks in a row.

  21. It’s really simple. Doing something about climate change is expensive. It would halt the flowing money stream. Therefore, because it’s not obviously killing us this minute, it doesn’t matter.

  22. Great old quote: It’s hard to change a person mind when they paid to believe the opposite

  23. Republicans lives suck and they think it’s impossible to do better.  They want the end of the world because that means an end to their suffering, and the fantasy of being born into something better.  Climate change, infectious disease, they welcome them.

  24. Because it would be too embarrassing to face reality and admit the failures of capitalism and the need to not further exploit natural resources for profit. So they remain delusional or hypocrites.

  25. The Rapture is happening next week also big oil money.

  26. My brother, a surgeon, smugly told me, “The climate’s always changing.”
