MANILA, Philippines — Bulgaria advanced to the 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship for the first time in 55 years after a four-set win over Czech Republic, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, on Saturday, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Aleksandar Nikolov made a monstrous performance of 31 points on 27 attacks, a block, and three aces to allow his squad reach the FIVB Worlds finals for the first time since 1970.
His brother Moni made 43 excellent sets.
Aleks said he could not believe that his team has a chance to give Bulgaria its first ever title in the World Championship.
“We were there. I mean this is a historic match for us for 55 years. I think they told me this hasn’t been done for a small country like Bulgaria where sports is really important, especially volleyball, it’s something incredible,” Aleks said.
Aleks and Moni gained popularity in the Philippines due to their impeccable performance inside the court and their strong European features.
Bulgaria’s team captain Aleks Grozdanov scored 12 points while Asparuh Asparuhov added 10.
Lukas Vasina led Czech Republic with 17 points.
