And they need more money.

> Bestuurders die meermaals ­tegen de lamp lopen met gelijkaardige overtredingen, zullen daar binnenkort ook een hogere prijs voor betalen. “Als mensen vandaag systematisch 140 km per uur rijden op de snelweg, kunnen ze daar vijf, tien, twintig keer van afkomen met een even hoge boete”, zegt minister van Justitie Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD). De regering zal een progressief systeem invoeren, ook voor lichte overtredingen die met een onmiddellijke inning afgehandeld worden. Het systeem lijkt een eerste stap richting een ­­rij­bewijs met punten, dat al in veel Europese landen bestaat en waarover in België al decennialang ­gediscussieerd wordt.

  1. I’ll be clear, I’m completely against using a phone behind the wheel but once again it they will be taking pictures of me everywhere I go and it will be coupled with a license plate.

    While they are at it, they found a way to get more money from us as well.

    I’ve said it before, as did half of Belgium when they first introduced those ANPR cameras less than a decade ago, it’s about the money. They said it was to track criminals, but we knew.

    They will also see passengers obviously, but no mention of it. This is the worst part imo, my kids and wife etc having their picture taken because I’m driving my car to be reviewed by some faceless government employee (or private party as they will not be able to handle this additional work so it will be contracted to the private sector sooner than later).

    Note it will not only be used for phone use, that’s just the carrot they use to get public opinion on their side, they will look for anything. In a few years you’ll get a fine for not using an indicator when taking a turn. Mark my words.

  2. Check the begroting of Flanders. It literally includes money from fines. If you do that you lose all credibility of just doing it to improve safety.

    And I’m against these cameras. You cannot even face your accuser in court.
