*”With a war raging, Hamas remaining the de facto government of Gaza, and no clarity on next steps, too many questions remain about the future state of Palestine for it to be prudent for New Zealand to announce recognition at this time,” Peters said in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday.*
SS: New Zealand says it won’t yet recognise a Palestinian state, with Foreign Minister Winston Peters citing the war in Gaza, Hamas’s control and uncertainty over the future. He warned recognition now could harden positions and hinder a ceasefire.
PM Christopher Luxon stressed recognition is a matter of “when, not if.” The move leaves New Zealand out of step with Australia, Canada, and Britain, which recognised Palestine this week.
The Labour opposition slammed the decision, calling it a failure of leadership.
We do not negotiate with terrorists.
The New Zealanders are too busy trying to push back against Maori representation in politics to try and do any good for anyone else in the world.
We made the right decision, I don’t really have time for pointless symbolic gestures. Though I doubt the world was waiting with bated breath to see what little New Zealand was going to do, unlike what some people here seem to think.
Good for New Zealand.
