KATERINI, Greece – It was a long day on the beach at Aloha Beach Bar on Saturday, as the U.S. Senior men and women competed in three rounds of competition at Beach World Series Katerini.

There were two rounds initially scheduled for Saturday, but the forecast for substantial rain on Sunday morning led to organizers to adding the third round of Group competition onto the day’s schedule. All of the Group matches were concluded on Saturday night instead of Sunday morning, and the elimination round pairings have been set.

Adriana Gomez powered her way into Sunday’s semifinals at women’s 50 kg with three impressive wins in Group A. In order, Gomez stopped Alevtyna Liashenko of Ukraine, 3-1, Exdoxia Palidou of Greece, 3-0 and Yuliia Zasulska of Ukraine, 3-2.

Gomez, who is competing in her first Senior Beach World Series event, has drawn Aikaterini Vekri of Greece in the semifinals, which will begin at 4:00 p.m. local time. A morning session will not be held on Sunday.

Gomez, who is a redshirt sophomore at Colorado Mesa, won a bronze medal at the U20 Beach World Championships on Friday. So far this week, Gomez has won seven of the eight matches she has competed in.

No other U.S. athlete, either male or female, was able to advance from the Group competition, which was highly competitive all day. The random draw was unkind to Team USA, as six U.S. wrestlers ended up in knockout matches, which they had to win in order to compete in the Group stages. The USA won four of their knockout matches, including 2023 U17 World champion Kennedie Snow (60 kg women), Maura White (70 kg women), Erin Kramer (Over 70 kg women) and Francis Morrissey (80 kg men).

Snow had another big victory in her Group competition, beating Maria Baez Dillone of Spain, 3-1. Snow won some key scramble positions in the sand to score three one-point moves. Baez was an NCWWC national runner-up for King University and has competed in three Senior World Championships in freestyle for Spain. Snow is a freshman at Montreat College. Snow dropped matches to veteran Ukrainian stars Oksana Moskalova and Sofiia Kushnir of Ukraine and was unable to advance.

Morrissey followed up his knockout victory with an impressive 31-second fall over U.S. teammate Ty Loethen, who was a 2023 Beach World medalist, after placing third in his weight class in the Beach World Series standings. Morrissey, an NAIA All-American for Missouri Valley College, dropped two close matches in his Group and did not advance. Morrisey was in his first Beach World Series competition.

White added a second win on the day by beating Sara Trbulin of Slovenia, 1-1 by criteria. Other U.S. wrestlers who had a win during the day were 2024 World bronze medalist Kyle Ferriter (Over 90 kg men) and Jacob Bumgardner (90 kg men).

Gomez will be the only U.S. wrestler competing on Sunday, with the elimination rounds and the finals set for 4:00 p.m. local time. Katerini, Greece is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. The event is broadcast live on FloWrestling.
