Over the past few days, I’ve watched in awe at the extraordinary achievements of my greater LGBTQ+ Catholic community in Rome as they participate in a pilgrimage as part of the Jubilee Year. They have walked through the Holy Doors—out and proud. They had a standing room only Mass at the Jesuit Church in Rome (known as the Gesù), with nuns and priests among the many in the pews. Perhaps most astonishingly, the liturgy was presided over by Bishop Francesco Savino, the vice president of the Italian bishops’ conference. That they got a “semi-official” LGBTQ event on the Vatican’s Holy Year calendar is nothing short of astounding.
