On 26 September 2025, Sweden’s first, and to date only, astronaut, Dr. Christer Fuglesang, visited Thailand for a day dedicated to space diplomacy, science dialogue, and academic collaboration.
The visit began at the Bangkok Planetarium, where Dr. Fuglesang recorded an interview and later shared his experiences in space exploration with the public. His talk focused on the role of science in fostering cooperation and innovation across borders.
At a luncheon hosted by the Swedish Ambassador in Bangkok, Dr. Fuglesang met with representatives from the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), Chulalongkorn University, the Royal Thai Air Force, Swedish company SAAB, and Thailand’s Department of Climate Change and Environment. Discussions highlighted opportunities for joint initiatives in space and climate research.
In the afternoon, Dr. Fuglesang met with physics scholars from Chulalongkorn University and delivered a public lecture on life aboard the International Space Station, new advances in space science, and sunshade technology aimed at mitigating climate change.
The visit underlined the shared commitment of Sweden and Thailand to expand cooperation in space research, education, and innovation, the Swedish Embassy states.
