NATO announced on Saturday that it is strengthening its mission in the Baltic Sea by adding an air-defence frigate and other resources in response to recent drone sightings near military sites in Denmark. The Danish Armed Forces reported that unidentified drones were observed overnight, following multiple drone incursions near airports and critical infrastructure over the week. Copenhagen Airport, the busiest in the Nordic region, had to close temporarily due to large drones in its airspace, and several smaller Danish airports were also shut down.

In a statement, NATO indicated that it would enhance surveillance in the Baltic region with new intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tools. The alliance did not specify which countries would contribute these additional assets. This upgrade supports NATO’s “Baltic Sentry” mission, aimed at protecting vital infrastructure in light of recent incidents involving damaged underwater cables and pipelines.

Furthermore, NATO launched the “Eastern Sentry” mission to strengthen defenses against Russian drone activities. The organization warned Russia of a strong military response if necessary, while Russian officials claimed their aircraft had not violated foreign airspace. Germany recognized the high drone threat and plans defensive measures.
