Andrew Bailey joined a business roundtable on Wednesday, September 24, hosted by the Black Country Chamber of Commerce at West Bromwich Albion FC, where firms from across the region discussed trading conditions, investment uncertainty and inflation.

The event was led by Sarah Moorhouse, chief executive of the Black Country Chamber.

Mr Bailey said: “These regional sessions are really always hugely valuable to us.

“You tell us what’s really going on.”

The meeting, held under Chatham House rules, brought together business leaders from Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley and Wolverhampton to share their experiences.

Topics included inflation, labour market challenges, recent policy changes, national insurance contributions and ongoing concerns around business investment.

Mr Bailey also outlined current economic conditions, noting that consumer price index (CPI) inflation remains above the Bank’s two per cent target at 3.8 per cent.

Ms Moorhouse said the governor’s visit was an important opportunity for the region.

She said: “We’re extremely grateful to Governor Bailey for taking the time to visit the Black Country and hear directly from our local businesses about the real challenges they’re facing on the ground.

“It does help hopefully that as a third-generation West Brom fan he was also able to meet businesses on home ground and take the opportunity for a quick stadium tour as well.

“I’d also like to thank all the businesses who participated in the discussion – their insights are invaluable in helping the Bank understand the economic conditions affecting our region.

“These are undoubtedly challenging times for Black Country firms, particularly with the current JLR shutdown affecting many companies in the supply chain.”

The visit coincided with the chamber’s launch of its Bostin Black Country Business campaign, which aims to showcase the resilience and strengths of the region’s economy.
