PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — Mainers taking to the sea in solidarity with Gaza.

On Sunday morning in Casco Bay, dozens of kayaks, sailboats, and other vessels took part in the Maine Gaza Solidarity Flotilla.

The protestors took off from the East End Boat Launch and headed towards Fort Gorges.

They are the first local sea parade to draw attention to an international humanitarian flotilla movement.

Organizers say they are making a statement against the war in Gaza.

It may not have been immediately obvious to everybody that what was happening in Palestine was wrong. It’s wrong on a moral level, it’s wrong on a political level. It’s also wrong on the level that, we can’t bomb our way to peace. We can’t always proceed with violence,” Erin Kiley of the Maine Coalition for Palestine said.

About 66,000 people have died in the war since it began in October 2023.

The vast majority of the casualties have been Palestinians.
