A riot erupted on Sunday evening at the Kassaveteia juvenile detention center near Volos in central Greece, public broadcaster ERT reported.
The detainees, aged 15 to 18, smashed windows, set fire to mattresses and hurled wooden objects at guards, prompting an immediate response from police and judicial authorities, the report said.
Prison staff, supported by members of the police’s Crime Prevention and Suppression Teams (OPKE), moved in to contain the unrest, while a prosecutor was dispatched to help restore order. Firefighters were also called to extinguish the blazes.
The cause of the disturbance was not immediately clear. It was the latest in a series of incidents at Kassaveteia, raising concerns about detention conditions and security at the facility.
An investigation is under way.
