Since leaving the US, one of the most common questions i get asked when meeting someone new is “do you miss having Walmart? I heard it was open 24hrs. We don’t do that here in Germany”. I’m visiting my parents for the week and they live in a small town of 600 people. They were so excited to get me in the car and show me this last night lol. Upon some googling I did, these automated smart stores are starting to become a growing trend. The only things we had in my town that’s 24hrs is our gym and a vending machine lol

  1. Usually they are (like the one you saw) in rural areas, where regular stores cannot be operated in a economally valuable manner.
Instead of just vanishing like in the past, they now build these one.
People from around the area buy shares for 100€ to get the entry card.
    This gets you 24/7 acess.
When the store is opened they can also vote to vary the items in the store.

  2. In a village near my city we had a legendary minced meat (“Mett”) cooled vending machine. They since have expanded to a whole go-in smart store. Pretty neat!

  3. Mannheim hbf has had one for a little while now. You need to scan your EC/debit card to get in.
