The North Allegheny water polo teams traveled to eastern Pennsylvania to take part in the Beast of the East tournament. The boys went 3-1 on the weekend while the girls finished with a 1-3 record.
Boys
On Friday, the NA boys opened with a 13-2 decisive victory over Exeter. Callan Bunger and Tabari Morgan each scored five goals while Philip Liulias, Filip Malezanov and Bryce Miller all added tallies. Miller and Mason Shantz each had three steals defensively. Michael Stefanko had five saves in net while Gannon Brooks had a save.
In game two, the Tigers defeated Loyola 14-7. Bunger had five goals in this match as well to go along with four steals. Morgan added four more goals to his season tally while Shantz and Malezanov contributed goals. Nathan Hilbert had a goal as well. Stefanko made eight saves.
On Saturday in bracket play, North Allegheny continued to roll with a 13-9 triumph over Wilson. Morgan led the way offensively with four goals, Bunger added a hat trick while Shantz, Malezanov and Logan Purnell each had two goals. Stefanko made nine saves in net.
That win got NA to the semifinals, where their tournament run would end falling to Greenwich, 11-10. Morgan had five goals in the contest, Bunger added another three. Malezanov tallied another marker to go along with two steals while Miller had a goal. Stefanko made 10 saves.
Girls
The Lady Tigers opened tournament play with a tough 8-7 loss to Wissahickon in overtime. Sophomore Karuna Ghuman led the way with four goals. Bella Spino had a goal to go along with five steals and three blocks defensively while Mikaela Dassanaike added two goals. Katherine Vales made nine saves.
In the second match of the day, NA fell 7-5 to Exeter. Dassanaike had two goals while Spino added a goal and six steals. Ghuman tallied another goal while junior Sania Bedi netted her first career goal. Vales had seven saves in net.
It was another heartbreaking loss to start Saturday as North Allegheny dropped a 9-8 contest to Perk Valley. Spino led the Tigers offensively with six goals while Dassanaike added two goals. Sania Bedi had three steals while Vales made seven saves. NA as a team played very well defensively with nine total steals and six different players committing thefts.
After some tough losses, the Tigers got into the win column with a 10-6 victory over Whitman. Spino added six more goals while Dassanaike got the hat trick. Ghuman netted the other goal. Bedi once again played well defensively with five steals and dished out three assists. Vales made 14 saves.
The North Allegheny boys improve to 9-1 overall while the NA girls are now 2-7. Both teams will head to McDowell tomorrow to take on the Trojans at 6 p.m.
