As reactions flood in after the announcement that rapper Bad Bunny will be performing at next year’s Super Bowl, MAGA fans seem particularly upset that the Puerto Rican pop star has been photographed in drag.
For his 2020 video for his single “Yo Perreo Sola,” Bad Bunny dressed in three different drag looks. Trump activists have also labeled the star a “massive Trump hater” and an “anti-ICE activist”.
One online MAGA account shared photos of the singer in drag outfits on X, and raged, “Apparently this is ‘Bad Bunny’. The NFL has selected him to be the Super Bowl halftime performer. I’d rather have a colonoscopy without anesthesia than watch that crap.”
Another person replied: “He’s literally the most streamed artist on the Planet. It’s a perfect business decision. Lol.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom quickly responded to the discourse, pointing out that Bad Bunny isn’t the only famous face to be photographed in drag, and reminded MAGA of some old photos of the Trump Administration’s Vice President JD Vance.

The Governor Newsom Press Office mockingly posted on X, “I’m bOyCoTtInG ThE SuPeR BoWl bEcAuSe bAd bUnNy dReSsEd iN DrAg,” accompanied by an old picture of the VP wearing a blonde wig and eyeliner, accessorized with some gold jewelry.
The photos of Vance in drag originally made headlines in 2024, after podcaster Matt Bernstein published one of the photos on X and Instagram showing Vance dressed in drag at a party while at Yale Law School.
Bernstein posted the photo with the caption, “I have obtained a photo of JD Vance in drag while at Yale Law School”, and later told The Daily Beast that it was taken “from a group chat of Vance’s fellow classmates and is from a friend of a friend.” It is alleged that the photograph dates back to 2012 and is from a Halloween party.
Many found the photographs of Vance in drag interesting because of his views on LGBTQ, particularly his opposition to transgender rights.
Singer Bad Bunny, a prominent Latino musician, was announced as the lead act at the Super Bowl on Monday. This comes weeks after he said he wouldn’t perform in the US on his world tour because he was worried about ICE raids.
Some Conservatives have been critical of the decision for him to perform at the annual league championship game.
Robbie Starbuck of the conservative Heritage Foundation said, “Is it that hard to pick a unifying music act that doesn’t want to peddle woke propaganda? Does this guy really scream American football to anyone? Be for real with me. No one thinks he does. This isn’t about music, it’s about putting a guy on stage who hates Trump and MAGA.”
