Greece’s Cabinet has approved 19,489 new public sector positions for 2026, focusing on healthcare, defense, local government, education, justice, infrastructure and civil protection, the Ministry of Interior announced Tuesday.

The National Health System will gain 5,228 new positions, primarily for doctors, nurses and medical staff.

Defense and military training schools will receive 1,517 roles, while municipalities will see expanded staffing for technical services, sanitation and veterinary positions.

Firefighting and civil protection units, police and specialized security personnel will also be reinforced.

Additional hires are planned for education, judicial bodies, transport authorities and tax and labor inspection agencies.

Cabinet also approved a 40-million-euro productivity bonus program for public employees, including local government staff.

Bonuses are tied to government objectives and may reach up to 15% of annual salaries, equivalent in some cases to roughly one month’s pay.
