Export from UK to EU almost did not decline. Import from EU to UK fell by 25%, probably replaced by the US and Asia. The journalist is just stupid and contradicts citations in his own article and Redditors in comments as usual read only the headline and post bollocks.

It adds: “In contrast, we find a smaller and only temporary decline in relative UK exports to the EU, but nevertheless a large and sustained drop in the extensive margin of exports, driven by the exit of low-value relationships.”
