CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Escucha Mi Voz issued a statement to Cedar Rapids city officials challenging restrictions to their protests outside Homeland security offices.
The immigrant advocacy group says a portion of the lawn, identified as a public right-of-way, was roped off without a permit by Homeland Security at the ICE office on Square Drive.
The letter says the city manager confirmed that the front lawn of the ICE facility is a “public right-of-way under Cedar Rapids jurisdiction.”
The group is asking the city to enforce its ordinance and stop ICE from blocking a public right-of-way. It says barriers should be removed and ensure that federal agencies are held to the same standards as other businesses.
The letter states that the First Amendment designates public spaces as “traditional public forums,” preventing any federal agency from closing or obstructing those spaces without approval.
Escucha Mi Vos organizers say they will be outside the Cedar Rapids ICE office Wednesday morning for the next round of check-ins.
