Momentum said Wednesday it is lending its full support to the Nationalist Party’s motion to enshrine environmental protection within the Constitution.
This proposed constitutional change is of paramount importance and would require a two-thirds majority in Parliament. This would make environmental safeguards far more difficult to reverse or weaken in the future, the party said.
Momentum is calling on all Members of Parliament from the Labour Party to vote in favour of this motion, which will be debated in the House tomorrow. Momentum believes that regardless of political affiliation, every representative must recognise the urgent need to protect the nation’s natural heritage.
Momentum’s General Secretary, Mark Camilleri Gambin, stated: “Our land, sea, and air have been deteriorating for years due to uncontrolled and often illegal development. The environment is the very lifeline of our country, and its protection is a matter of conscience for every person who holds public office. We believe this constitutional change is an essential step toward preserving Malta for present and future generations.”
In addition to its parliamentary appeal, Momentum is urging all citizens to attend the upcoming protest organised by nearly 50 non-governmental organisations this Saturday, October 4th, at 10:00 a.m. in Valletta. The demonstration will serve as a powerful public statement that the people demand a commitment to a sustainable and livable future for Malta.
