Good thing the police are so effective in tackling crime!
Hepatitis in kids rose after lockdown. How fxked up is that? What happens when you keep people locked up.
Number of people around rose after lockdown restrictions ended…and all that follows.
It’s a bit of a bizarre title, if you read the article. The actual story is that serious violence fell during lockdown, as you might expect with fewer interactions between people, and has returned to roughly “normal” levels since. There’s probably a small amount of “additional” violence resulting from people overdoing it once things reopened, but the numbers haven’t risen over the numbers for any year from 2000 – 2018 so it’s not like, as the title implies, we’re in the midst of some new violence epidemic.
This isn’t surprising. Humans are shit.
I’m curious how many of these incidents were fueled by alcohol though. Our relationship with alcohol is messy at best. Seen people in some right states when the pubs first opened again.
Can’t say I’ve noticed more violence but I haven’t been out drinking on a night for a few years so less likely to see it I guess.
Definitely noticed more people are a lot more rude in general. Less patient too.
Noticed a lot more people arguing with people like ticket inspectors on the trains. Bus drivers. Even bloody checkout staff.
There is something going on in this country, and I can’t explain it. People are definitely more angry. Whether it’s road rage, car parks, supermarkets or any number of other contexts- people are less patient and more readily becoming extremely angry.
I even considered whether the thread that ran through this experience might be me, but I am satisfied that it isn’t (maybe lockdown, finances, etc has had an effect on my patience or attitude, but it has not been the catalyst for being subject to a lot more experiences of others losing their tempers). All anecdotal of course, but I guess that’s how ideas start and only research by smarter people than me will prove or disprove it.
I don’t really understand what has caused it but I can probably try and speculate. Lockdown meant mental health services withdrawing, lack of social support exacerbating existing issues and them not being identified and nipped in the bud by friends and family, drinking increased with nothing else to do, relationships got put under increased strain, jobs were lost and businesses went bust, activities that people used as outlets were cancelled.
The lockdown is over, but there are millions still affected by it and I think the social impact of that will be felt for a long time to come. I imagine that in 10 years there will be books written about this post-lockdown age of rage.
This phenomenon is far more pronounced in the USA, where major cities have seen a big uptick in violence. Even my usually hardy Brooklyn friends are worried about it.
I think its probably the price of everything going up and people unable to live. Lots more theft these days.
Serious violence we know about. Much domestic violence or abuse is hidden.
This is complete nonstory really, isn’t it? “serious violent crime dropped off while peopel were forced to stay in their houses for a whole year, but rose back to pre-pandemic levels afterward”. You can make the same case for LOADS of different activities and events.
I’m amazed the Beeb even think this is worth a story. I suppose that begs the question what *isn’t* being reported on today?
It’s a bit like the tories boasting about shoplifting falling under 2020 as an example of the tories being tough on crime.
While ignoring the real reason is most of the bloody shops were shut for months.
Click bait.
Lockdown of course had a huge effect on violent crime, so comparing an open society with a locked down one will massively skew the figures, and the current levels are still below pre-pandemic levels.
Fraud, however, is massively up but for some reason the Tories don’t want to mention that .
You think the rise in serious crime is bad wait to see the silly crime.
