Hello people of r/latvia!
So last weekend we traveled to Riga with a few friends and had an awesome evening in a local bar. It was very fun to hear the pop music of this country and we really liked many songs and used shazam as much as we could. Unfortunately the one song that got completely stuck in our heads wasn’t recognized and we haven’t been able to find it.
I’m going to describe the song, that is, what remains of it in my memory, and I have no idea what the words were… So bear with me.
Basically the chorus sounds like someone chanting the same two words (might be 3 or 4, again I can’t understand it) 3 times. This is going to sound super weird but it sounds like they’re saying
Donbas, Budapest!
Donbas, Budapest!
Donbas, Budapest!
I know this may sound crazy but me and my friends joked about this being the lyrics and after that we couldn’t hear anything different! Anyway, it’s a very upbeat song, and most people were singing along with the chorus.
I hope I haven’t made too much of a fool of myself… Anyway, Latvia was awesome!

Could you describe the music to narrow down genre? Male or female vocal? Was there guitar solo or any other instrument, or was this more of generic synth n effects type of music? Maybe there is any other song you found it familiar to? Rhytmic pattern at least. Did it sound modern or something out of 90s, 2000s?
Sup, i feel like the donbass part must have been more like the name Thomas, only in latvian – Tomass with a hard t, like in Train.
As for Budapest, try to remember if the ending of this word sounded like a discernable S, like that in Snake. If it did, then thats probably a last name, meaning it was a choir calling someone.
Budapest could also be Būšu te. But idk.
Maybe try searching “tu man esi, man nevajag ne debesis ne zemi”
The question really is, in which of those words you could discernably hear a specific letter. Remember, latvian has a lot of hard letters, and the R is very different than in english, it rolls.
Hope this helps, do you remember any other details?
Have no idea mate sorry. But…to make it more fun for all of us you could hum the melody and upload it somewhere.
Any chance its this one? https://youtu.be/bu6TwZR8cYc
In case you want to know, you have been pretty wrong about everything you ‘ve said about it 😀 It’s from 1987, and has abolutely nothing to do with chants. It’s about a man telling a woman he has to leave her, the chorus is “yellow shoes, yellow shoes, yellow shoes I have” which makes little sense in the context of the song itself. It is a typical 80s song, in music and otherwise. I guess OP isnt’really knowledgeable about music 😀 You were also off with the rhythmic pattern, it’s actually dzel-te/nas-kur/pes ( so 1-2-2).
A-Europa 😂😂🤣
Donbas – Domas ?😬👀🤦
