NEW DELHI: IMF Economist Shekhar Aiyar has been appointed as Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Chairman Pramod Bhasin and the Board of Governors of the ICRIER announced on Wednesday that Dr. Aiyar will join as the ICRIER’s new Director and Chief Executive on November 3.

Dr Aiyar is currently the Assistant Director in the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he oversees the work programme on trade and industrial policy.

Before that, he served as the IMF’s Mission Chief for Germany and Head of the Eurozone Division. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), a Visiting Professor at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), and an Advisor to the Bank of England.

Dr Aiyar holds a BA in Economics from Delhi University, an MA in Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University, and a PhD in Economics from Brown University. He has published widely in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Financial Economics, American Economic Review, European Economic Review, IMF Economic Review, Journal of EconomicGrowth and Journal of Money, Credit and Banking. His opinions have appeared in The New York Times and the Financial Times.

Making the announcement, ICRIER Chairperson Pramod Bhasin said: “Shekhar brings terrific breadth and depth, particularly in areas of international trade and recent research on geo-economic fragmentation, a topic of tremendous relevance today. His global experience and network, and research expertise will be a huge asset for ICRIER.”
