With 5A boys golf regular season wrapping up this week with the final region tournaments, the focus shifts to next week’s state tournament at Talon’s Cove on Monday and Tuesday. Skyline has won five of the past six 5A state championships, including last year.

The Eagles won’t head into the state tournament as region champs though as they finished a close second to Olympus in the final Region 6 standings. The other region champs are Cyprus, Fremont and Spanish.

Olympus averaged 278.3 in region play, with Skyline close behind with a 280.3. Fremont had the third-best team stroke average with a 280.9.

The four region medalists in 5A are Cyprus’ Brody Loutensock, West Field’s Mack Herzog, Olympus’ Will Pederson and Timpview’s Calvin Lillywhite.

Pederson finished with the low average in 5A this fall with a 66.3. He was followed closely by Skyline’s Austin Shelley, who averaged a 66.8 in region play. A total of 11 5A golfers averaged in the 60s this season, which should make for a wide open and competitive tournament.

The top returning finisher from last year’s state tournament is Salem Hills’ Carson Peterson, who finished second with a 9-under 135. In Region 7 this season, Peterson finished runner-up with a 70.8 average.
