This sounds very familiar
The USSR collapsed when oil prices collapsed. It had absolutely nothing to do with lack of faith in state media, which is as crooked today as it was back then.
Corporate media in the US does the same trick. They act like they are informing us but really just protecting whoever pays their bills.
Seems you get nothing from the words of Solzhenitsyn. All knew, still nothing changed. As it did not matter what people think or know.
USSR collapsed when the cost of communism and corruption became too high. So communists faked democracy, to avoid paying the bill. Every “revolution” in former communist country was organized by communist state secrete services. Again all knew, but it did not matter.
The USSR fell because the big man in Moscow promised not to kill dissidents. And because nobody had been allowed to complain since 1921 they did not realize that everyone else saw Russia as their colonial master and wanted independence
Not really how it was and Solzhenitsyn was pro-Putin asshole.
The regime got weaker and unable to suppress more. The last attempt at reform from inside failed and that allowed its fall. People did not suddenly realized anything special about lies … they only realized that “hey regime is kind of weak at this moment”.
Well we cooked, because it’s been obvious for several decades and yet here we are.
The government held the families of emergency workers hostage in pripyat for 2 days until they got chernobyl under control (inside the radiation zone)…..
Some point to the outrage over this event as the flash point that started the fall.
The two largest newspapers in the USSR were Pravda (Truth) and Izvestia (News). The old joke was “There’s no news in Pravda, and there’s no truth in Izvestia.”
