The Senate requires 60 votes to pass a budget bill. They can’t do it without Democrats. So Democrats are, in part, to blame.
*However*… It’s not the opposition party’s purpose to just blindly agree with everything the government in power says and does, without concession or compromise. Republicans are very much demanding “My way or the highway” like they’ve always done.
This was an ‘okay’ tool for them when THEY were the opposition party, to get concessions from the party in power. But now as the party in power? Yeah, it’s on THEM to compromise and try to get the opposition party on board. Trying to frame this like it’s the Democrats causing the problem when Republicans haven’t even tried to offer compromise or concession is just insane.
Sadly, they are in charge of The Media as well.
What is always missing from this is *why* the government is shutting down. Here’s a brief rundown of the times it has happened in the past:
Shutdowns 1-8: These were all under Reagan. This was usually because Democrats wanted to spend money on people who were poor or oppressed to make them less so, and Reagan wanted to spend it on guns or missiles. Once it was because Reagan wanted a BBQ.
Shutdown 9: Bush Sr. wanted a lower deficit.
Shutdown 10 & 11: Republicans wanted to balance the budget by charging medicare patients more, Clinton vetoed to prevent it leaving us without a budget and a shut-down government.
Shutdown 12: Republicans tried to stop Obamacare from making sure insurance companies couldn’t take your money for decades and then let you die.
Shutdown 13: Trump thinks immigrants who were brought here as children should be deported, Democrats think children shouldn’t be held responsible for crimes their parents committed. This was in a budget negotiation because the ball has been dropped on these children *since Reagan*.
Shutdown 14: Trump wanted more money for his wall grift
This shutdown: The Republicans once again want to make more money from American’s healthcare costs, but this time have abandoned the pretense that it’s about budget balancing, since they aren’t even close to a balanced budget.
You all can decide which, if any, of those things were worth shutting the government down for.
Interestingly, during the Trump shutdowns, Trump took credit and blame for the shutdown. Right up until the very day it happened, when he *immediately* reversed course and blamed the democrats. Despite *weeks* of literal bragging about it, most of his base swiveled on a dime and blamed the democrats too.
