I mean, the Serbian monarchy was abolished last century, so I’m not sure why this matters.
At first glance this may seem to be no big deal – opting out of succession from a defunct royal house in exile. However as defunct royal houses go, the Karađorđević dynasty seems almost poised for a return to power as a constitutional monarch in Serbia. That is one of the proposals being considered and polls show that many people are in favor of such a plan that a could help unite the various nationalities that have been so hard to keep under one government.
Peter’s father Alexander is known as the Crown Prince because that was actually his title at birth – he was the heir to the throne in Yugoslavia (which is what Serbia had become) for the first year of his life until Tito declared the country a communist republic in 1945. So should the family be invited back (they have already been given their palaces back where Alexander and his wife now live), Alexander would simply be assuming the title to which he was born. And, since he is rather advanced in age, Peter at 42 would soon succeed him.
But now, the next in line are Peter’s twin brothers Philip and Alexander (both 40), with Philip as the senior twin.
Peter is also a US citizen – he was born in Chicago, went to grade school in the Washington DC area, and then finished school in England. (His godmother is Princess Anne.) He has made a career in graphic design and art direction in London, New York, and Seville Spain where he now lives. He is unmarried and I am sure for the last 20 years there has been enormous pressure on him to marry and produce an heir. This abdication is a split from his father, although the rest of his family was by his side supporting him.
