Says the guy who has managed the terminal decline in the DF for the last few years….
Pay them properly and there may be some retention of those already there.
Ah yes 3,000 lads down at the Curragh will sort the Russians out.
Either you commit to defending your country (i.e what everybody bordering Russia should do, join NATO and build up manpower and defences so they can’t take the country) or else you don’t because it’s not worth it and you rely on diplomacy and a collective defensive strategy which has worked well for us since Ireland hasn’t been invaded in the entire history of us as an independent nation.
I don’t really think this should be that controversial given more troops does not mean that we aren’t a neutral country, most countries described as neutral in Europe have stronger armies than we do. But I’d be more worried about cybersecurity given it seems obvious now that Russia is the most likely culprit for the HSE hack.
I do find it darkly funny that the assumption basically is that the United Kingdom will protect us if anything bad happens – and I think they would, which allows us to be neutral but that is kinda funny.
see the war posts have dried up all of a sudden round here, and the yellow and blue banner has gone now too. Not enough farma karma in it for youse now? or is it over? or have you jumped onto the next bandwagon?
There is absolutely zero hope of this happening, without a significant overhaul of the organisation.
Sure, we haven’t been able to get up to “minimum” strength for about a decade….and thats between 500-1000 extra people.
3000 is not a realistic figure.
They don’t treat the soldiers they have right. Coveney is pushing for us to join nato.
Lol, that figure might be achievable in ten years if they put in place extremely focused and directed measures, and massively increase the funding to support that increased capacity.
At the moment many are absolutely jumping at the opportunity to poach people away from the DF as they can get paid far better in the private sector and in many instances have useful skills, especially any experienced NCO’s or officers.
And the RDF just gets sidelined in so many ways that it also struggles to train and retain adequate numbers.
The political will simply isn’t there to support the DF as we have seen over the past years.
