SPARK Academy launched its participation in TVA EnergyRight’s School Uplift program with an energetic pep rally, inspiring students to conserve energy.

ATHENS, Ala. — SPARK Academy at Cowart Elementary brought energy to the classroom in more ways than one, kicking off its participation in TVA EnergyRight’s School Uplift program with an electric pep rally.

According to the school, the initiative helps schools across the region reduce energy costs and improve learning environments through training and grant opportunities. Students, teachers, and staff joined in chants like “Last Out, Lights Out” and were encouraged to be “Energy Energizers,” not “Energy Vampires.”

The school said students were especially excited to meet Spark, the School Uplift Energy Monster, and each classroom received a mini mascot named Newton to inspire daily energy-saving habits.

Jennifer Hathaway, a TVA Energy Coach, told the school, “The School Uplift program is more than just saving energy; it is about empowering students to take action and reminding them that even small choices make a big difference.”

The school said students are learning habits such as switching off lights when leaving a room and unplugging chargers when devices are fully charged. These practices reduce energy use, cut costs, and support a healthier learning environment. Participating schools can also earn Learning Environment Grants and Building Energy Upgrade Grants to support student well-being and make facilities more energy efficient.

SPARK Academy said reducing unnecessary energy use frees up resources to directly benefit classrooms and student learning, and the year-long program is designed to show students that energy conservation is about protecting resources, investing in students, and building sustainable futures.
