People reliant on cash risk being cut adrift, Which? says

  1. Honestly I’d love to hear from someone who is reliant on cash to understand why. I can’t fathom not using my phone/card to pay.

    Edit

It just occurred to me that the idea everyone has either a phone or a bank account is *somewhat* ignorant. I guess this will mostly affect the already underprivileged, how can you get a bank account when you don’t have an address?

  2. Haven’t used cash or even my physical card in a couple years now. Cash will die completely within a generation or two
Oldies doing their best to cling onto the past and be ignorant of technology like usual.

  3. As someone that prefers to use cash then card, it’s far easier to keep track off and I like having jars fill up with change. It also helps for tips in hospitality as i doubt most folks want to randomly give a waiter their card details just for a tip. Combined with battery running out or data being used up, I just like knowing that I can open my wallet and not worry about having nothing to pay with aside from the card.

  4. I mainly use a card for payments but when you’re buying something from Facebook Marketplace and turn up at their house, it’s easier to give them a £20 note than faff about with some kind of payment thing/sortcode/whatever. “Here’s £20.” Job jobbed.

Also, in Chinese culture, we give money as presents in a red packet with a couple of coins “for good luck”. I’m not putting a phone or my credit card in a red packet. How would that even work? And we’d still need coins.

  5. I work in a petrol station and interestingly enough, there has been more cash being used than card at the moment since I’d say when the £100 on the contactless happened. It’s increased even more so with the fuel crisis at the moment, purely anecdotal though.

  6. Also, why the fuck do people still beg on the street when literally nobody uses cash? What am I going to do, venmo them their heroin allowance?

  7. This comment section is great example of UK reddit’s disconnection from reality. “Me and my friends don’t use cash, therefore nobody should!”
