Kate Middleton made her first appearance today as Honorary Air Commodore in her new royal role, appointed by King Charles in November 2023.

Kate Visited RAF Coningsby In Lincolnshire, England

Earlier today, the Princess of Wales visited RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, England. It was also announced that Kate is Commander-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm and Colonel in Chief of the 1st Queen’s Dragon Guards.

Prince William received the title of Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Coningsby from his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Kate and William both have royal roles with the base.

Her paternal grandfather, Peter Middleton, served as an RAF fighter pilot during World War II and later as Prince Philip’s co-pilot during a tour of South America in 1962.

During today’s visit, Kate revealed that Prince Louiswants to become a fighter pilot. She mentioned that she would need to tell her son, “It takes eight years and a lot of hard work!”

Kate received a private briefing from Group Captain Paul O’Grady, Station Commander, and Warrant Officer Nikki Nolan, Station Warrant Officer for 18 months.

She was also given presents for her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, which consisted of three key rings. Kate was very moved by the gifts.

The Princess joked about her kids missing the big day, “They will be very upset that I’ve seen a Typhoon without them!”

The Princess Was Swarmed By Children

Kate was also surrounded by children, who swarmed her as she met the families who live on and around the base.

She bent down to chat with the adorable children, and one of the little girls tried to get a hold of her RAF badge and her watch. The child was quite intrigued.

Kate commented, “Maybe you should put it on your Christmas list! Maybe you should ask Father for Christmas!”

Another child held out her arms for a warm embrace from Kate. She was happy to hug her. She told another little girl, “I’m sorry I didn’t wear my dress today!”

Kate shared that her children envied her outing to the base to see military aircraft, particularly her boys, who are apparently very interested in aviation.

The Princess also received several bouquets of flowers and some drawings from the children. Kate joked, “I’m not going to be able to move into my phone with all these flowers!”

Kate was thrilled to be at the base and ended up staying an hour and a half more than she had initially intended.

Group Captain Paul O’Grady Praised Princess Catherine

Kate was wearing a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings that once belonged to Princess Diana, along with a gold RAF brooch on her smart blazer. The small detail was a reminder of her family’s strong connection to the RAF.

Group Captain Paul O’Grady said of her visit:

“It’s been absolutely brilliant, having the Honorary Air Commodore here, Princess Catherine.”

He continued,

“It’s her first visit to Coningsby and to give her a demonstration of what it is that operationally we deliver for the UK and for the Royal Air Force, but also, more importantly for me, it’s meeting the men and women that deliver it. And they’ve had a fabulous time and enjoyed meeting her.”

He added:

“Prince William’s been here before, and so she was talking about the fact that he’d been here, and she’d been delighted to get a chance to come along today, and certainly, very animated about her children, who are really into aviation. So there were a lot of conversations along those lines.”
