A Nationalist Government will appoint a minister dedicated specifically to the maritime sector and will re-establish the Malta Maritime Authority as distinct from Transport Malta, PN Leader Alex Borg said.

This authority will be focused, specialised, and will serve as a one-stop-shop for everything maritime – in its entirety, he added.

“The PN has always been at the forefront in expanding and strengthening the maritime sector throughout the years. It has consistently believed that the strategic position of our islands gives us a natural advantage over other countries in this field. Today, the PN firmly believes that this sector can continue to grow and be further strengthened, and will work to ensure that this becomes a reality,” the PN said in a statement.

As part of a series of meetings in preparation for Budget 2026, Leader of the Opposition and of the PN Alex Borg led a PN delegation for a meeting with the Malta Maritime Forum, which was represented by its Chairperson Godwin Xerri, Vice Chairperson Alex Montebello, CEO Kevin J Borg, and Board Member Ann Fenech.

Together with members of the MMF, the Leader of the PN discussed Malta’s successes in this field and how these can continue to grow and be strengthened.

“Given that Malta is endowed with every aspect of the maritime sector,” Alex Borg stressed that there must also be greater investment in careers within this field. He agreed on the need for maritime education and training starting from the secondary level, so that young students can begin careers in the sector from an early stage.

The Leader of the PN also spoke about the need for digitalisation and decarbonisation of the sector so that Malta is prepared for future challenges and can make the best possible use of the sector’s potential.

He emphasised that he wants our country not only to maintain European standards, but also to continue promoting Malta as a maritime hub and to strengthen the Maltese flag even further.

The PN said it remains committed to investing in this sector as one of the principal niches of the Maltese economy.

Also present for the meeting alongside Borg were Shadow Minister for Finance Adrian Delia, Shadow Minister for the Maritime Sector Ivan Castillo, and Shadow Minister for the Economy and Enterprise Jerome Caruana Cilia.
