LOS ANGELES, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — Crews have brought under control a massive fire that broke out Thursday night at Chevron’s refinery in El Segundo, Los Angeles County, local authorities said Friday.
The blaze erupted at around 9 p.m. Thursday and was visible for miles across the South Bay Area. Officials said there was no threat to the public.
“All refinery personnel and contractors have been accounted for and there are no injuries,” Chevron said in a statement.
No evacuation orders have been issued for nearby residents, and the facility’s fence line monitoring system has detected no air quality exceedances, according to the statement.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said they have been briefed on the incident and are closely monitoring developments. The governor’s office said it is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the community and ensure public safety.
Chevron’s website said that the El Segundo refinery, built in 1911, is its largest oil refinery on the U.S. West Coast, processing more than 276,000 barrels of crude oil per day. ■
