Parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic continue for a second day today.

Polling stations will reopen on October 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bulgarian time.

The Czechs are electing 200 deputies to the lower house of parliament under a proportional system. The electoral threshold is 5% for individual parties, 8% for two-party coalitions, and 11% for larger coalitions.

The race pits former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s opposition party ANO, which currently leads in the polls, against Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s ruling coalition SPOLU.

The result will determine whether the Czech Republic will continue on its current pro-European path, supporting increased military spending and support for Ukraine, or whether it will shift towards a more populist course, closer to that of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

President Petr Pavel has already made it clear that he will not accept a candidate for prime minister who questions the country’s membership in the EU or NATO. | BGNES
